What is Copper Sulfate?
Copper sulfate pentahydrate, whose chemical formula is CuSO4.5H2O, is an inorganic compound in the form of blue salt. It has widespread use in agriculture, industry and animal husbandry.
Agricultural Use:
Bordeaux mixture, a suspension of copper sulfate (CuSO4) and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2), is used to control fungus on many fruits and vegetables. It is produced by mixing a water solution of copper sulfate and a suspension of slaked lime.
Industrial Use:
In metal industry, large quantities of copper sulphate are used as an electrolyte in copper refining, for copper coating steel wire prior to wire drawing and in various copper plating processes. In the mining industry copper sulfate is used as an activator in the concentration by froth flotation of lead, zinc, cobalt and gold ores. Also we can see it in the printing trade as an electrolyte in the production of electrotype and as an etching agent for process engraving. And the paint industry uses copper sulfate in anti-fouling paints and it plays a part in the colouring of glass.
Other Use of Copper Sulfate:
Copper sulphate is used as an additive in animal feed to promote growth and correct copper deficiencies in the animals. In the other hand, as a non-agricultural herbicide, copper sulfate is used to control invasive aquatic plants and the roots of plants situated near water pipes. Additionally, it is used in swimming pools as an algicide. A dilute solution of copper sulfate is used to treat aquarium fishes for parasitic infections, and is also used to remove snails from aquariums and zebra mussels from water pipes. Copper ions are highly toxic to fish, however. Most species of algae can be controlled with very low concentrations of copper sulfate.
